About Walter Gropius-designed Tower East

Tower East was designed by Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus institute in Germany. Tower East occupied four years of his life, from 1964 to completion of construction in 1968, and is his last completed building in this country.

It was also the first high-rise building developed outside of the downtown area of Cleveland. It’s construction marked the beginning of a new stage of suburban business development in the city during the second half of the twentieth century.

Walter Gropius changed the architecture of the twentieth century. He was a pioneer in such design innovations as wrapping a building in transparent walls of glass rather than traditional heavy masonry. This insight provided the basis for modern buildings which brought in light and connected people’s working and living space to the landscape outside.

A planner as well as an architect, Gropius believed that buildings and cities should create an environment that enriches the lives of the people who work and live there, and that art should be an integral part of architecture and life. His own design work and his teaching at Bauhaus and later at Harvard influenced generations of architects and brought him worldwide acclaim.
